Villarreal stunned Italian giants Juventus in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) ‘Round of 16’ after a remarkable 3-0 victory in Turin handed them an impressive 4-1 aggregate win. They’ve failed to score in back-to-back La Liga (LL) losses to lowly opposition since that success though which will have dented confidence for Villarreal who prepare to play their first UCL quarter-final match since April 2009.
In this clash, Villarreal manager Unai Emery is set to take charge of his 50th UCL match and will be looking for his side to cause an almighty upset to extend his personal winning record (W21, D10, L18). His overall record (W8, D3, L5) vs German opposition previously doesn’t give much away for this clash, though his side have proven tough to beat on home soil so far this campaign (W10, D6, L3) which could be key as they look to snatch a vital first-leg advantage.
Visiting Bayern Munich stormed to an impressive 4-1 win over Freiburg at the weekend although controversy did play its part, as the German champions played a portion of that match with an extra man after a substitution mix-up! That positive result extended their streak on the road to just one loss from their last ten away outings across all competitions (W7, D2, L1).
The Bavarian giants also have excellent pedigree in the UCL to prolong, last winning the competition in 2019/20, whilst they’ve proven victorious in 26 of their last 29 such outings (D2, L1)! Equally as impressive, Bayern now haven’t lost an away UCL match since way back in September 2017.
Players to watch: Villarreal’s Arnaut Danjuma has struck five UCL goals this campaign, with four of those coming after half-time, whilst Bayern’s Leroy Sané has saved his best form for this competition this season, grabbing 12 goal contributions (G6, A6) across eight appearances!
