The ingenuity and creativity that symbolize the game of football would render a form of art rather than the physical context of the sport. Football players are granted the freedom of expression that is why it is the distinguished sport from others. Cricketers and baseball players are limited to specific actions, but football players may dribble, tackle, pass, or shoot in variety of different ways, which allows footballers to reach the peak of the sport.

The list below doesn’t include the current star players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, rather the list contains the players who have retired from the beautiful game.

10. Zinedine Zidane – France

Zinedine Zidane’s strong points are his passing, strength, ball control and individual skill. We got to see the best performances from Zidane in the most important or decisive games that we don’t get to see from many players. In 789 games he scored total of 159 goals as a central midfielder. He won 2000 European Championships and 1998 World Cup with France. With Real Madrid and Juventus he won one European Cup and 3 league titles.

9. George Best – Northern Ireland

The career of George Best was inundated by drink problems, but his ability and talent was almost unmatched. With Manchester United he won two league titles and 1968 European Cup. In 579 games he scored total of 205 goals as an attacking midfielder and was the winner of Ballon d’Or in 1968.

8. Ferenc Puskas – Hungary

Puskas was known for his precise goal scoring ability. Combining his scoring talent with the ability to produce new skills and general intelligence, he scored 700 goals in total of 705 matches. With Real Madrid he won 5 league titles and 3 European Cups. In 1954 he led Hungary to the World Cup Final.

7. Alfredo Di Stefano – Argentina

Stefano was a prolific player for Real Madrid with 511 sensational goals in 702 games. He wasn’t an orthodox forward though; he used to appear all over the filed, passing, tackling, and dictating the game. As a whole he was a complete footballer the game has ever seen. He won 5 European Cups with Real Madrid, and won total of 13 league titles throughout his career.

6. Michel Platini – France

With 353 goals in 652 matches, it wouldn’t be wrong to say Michel was an attacking midfielder. He was a superb free kick taker and excellent passer. Scoring 9 goals in 1984 European Cup, he almost helped France to win the championship. He won 3 league titles and a European Cup with Juventus.

5. Franz Beckenbauer – Germany

In today’s lingo, Beckenbauer was a defensive midfielder or a sweeper, but that wasn’t enough to stop him from scoring 111 goals in 776 appearances for Bayern Munich and Germany. Just like Di Stefano, he was seen all over the field, exerting his influence and dictating the game. Obviously he was the decisive captain, but combined with his all round technical ability, passing and dribbling; he was surely one of the greatest footballers ever. He won the 1972 European Championships, 1974 World Cup, along with 8 league titles and 3 European Cups during his career in clubs.

4. Johann Cruyff – Netherlands

Cruyff had the pace and dribbling of George Best and the strength, control and skill of Zinedine Zidane. Combination of calculating intelligence, clinical ability and sublime gracefulness made him the complete football player. As an attacking midfielder he scored 401 goals in 710 appearances. He won 10 league titles and 3 European Championships.

3. Zico – Brazil

Zico’s capability in football world was never in question, though he was seldom included in the list of top players due to his deficiency of successes. He was a prolific goal scorer with 527 goals in 769 matches. His ability to produce unique skills and shots also made him remarkable creator of goals. Moreover, he had mastered the free-kick and heading ability. He won 4 league titles and the Copa Libertadores.

2. Pele- Brazil

Pele is often ranked the best footballer in the history of the game. His dribbling ability, pace, strength and sheer power saw him score varieties of goal. In 1366 games he scored 1282 goals. The ultimate goal score machine helped Brazil win World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He also won 5 league titles and 2 Copa Libertadores.

1. Diego Maradona – Argentina

Undoubtedly Maradona’s talent was the greatest ever seen in the history of football. His crossing and passing were precise, his goal scoring was clinical and unique, and his dribbling ability was mesmerizing which helped earn him plenty of assists throughout his career. Being an attacking midfielder he score 345 goals in 680 matches. Though he had a difficult career than Pele, he still won 3 league titles and 1986 World Cup. He also won UEFA Cup with Napoli.

Having won last season’s edition, Manchester United FC lead the entries for the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League, which will conclude on Wednesday 27 May 2009 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome; the question that rises is «can they repeat?»

Last season Manchester United could say they questionable had their best season for an extensive, lengthy time. Cristiano Ronaldo (Premier League top scorer and World player of the year) and Wayne Rooney helped win two big titles, the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Both made millions of Euros.

The question this year will be in what order the ‘big four’ will be positioned. Can any team break into the elite group of clubs that are dominating English football? I will say it is possible!! Looking further down the league; can the newly promoted teams survive in the Premier League? Why not! They are prepared already.

Look at the ‘big four’. Manchester United has not brought any new bodies in (not that they need) but have lost someone significant, Tony Coton. Why will Coton be missed? Simple, best goalkeeping coach Manchester United has ever had and despite the fact the knee injury retired him for good, he will be someone to look for advice in a future.

Man Utd has survived the ‘Ronaldo saga’ and live to fight another day. All in all it has been a quiet summer for Manchester United. Alex Ferguson has said over the last few days that he hopes to sign an elite player soon (the name Robinho keeps popping in my head).

I don’t like to predict, but would expect Man Utd to be in the top two or I can foresee the future and say injuries could play a roll. Why? Well, besides the fact that this championship is being played in a «battle field» any injuries to key men like Ronaldo, Rooney or Tevez may mean they could struggle to score goals, has happened before; this was a problem that did occur at times last season, but like earlier mentioned, Ferguson is tracking a striker and this could put an end to any apparent flaw in the squad.

Now, how much is Chelsea willing to risk winning this year? Well, Scolari, Deco, Porto… need I say more? Of course I do, what about the dramatic change in tactics. Chelsea is going all the way, so don’t be surprised to see them playing another UEFA final game against Manchester United once again. Maybe you are wondering «will Chelsea focus more on the Champions League instead of the Premier League?» That sort of rational could ambition the title near Manchester.

Manchester United is with no doubt on top of the pile, not only locally, but on the European front. The current crop of players is certainly the finest manager Sir. Alex Ferguson has had at his retention in his twenty-two year influence, but who of the pretenders can make a strong claim as being genuine contenders this season? Will the ‘Big Four’ charge further away, or can others shorten the gap?

David Beckham is undoubtedly one of the most charismatic footballers the world has ever produced. A former captain of the English senior national team- The three lions, he has remained a focal point in world football, as exemplified by his recent appointment by England towards her unsuccessful bid for the FIFA 2018 and 2022 World Cup respectively.

One of the things that gives the 35 years old Beckham the cutting edge over other footballers, is the wonderful technique he usually deploys when taking free-kicks. He can curve the ball from outside the penalty area into the net with ease. He has scored crucial goals for both club and country via his trademark free-kicks. The accuracy with which he passes the ball and deliver crosses has also endeared him to the heart of football fans world-wide.

His club career has seen him playing for the biggest club in England- Manchester United, before moving over on loan to Preston North end in 1995. David Beckham was eventually signed by Spanish giant-Real Madrid for a whopping £25 million record transfer fee in 2003. This move made him one of the highest paid athletes in the world and created a lot of media buzz around the player.

His stay at Real Madrid were not the most memorable, as he never got to his full potential either through suspension or injury. It wasn’t long before Beckham soon parted way with the Club and pitched his tent with Major League soccer club- Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007 for a record transfer fee of US$32.5 million for a 5-year contract deal.

He got married to entertainment icon- Victoria Adams in a lavish ceremony on July 4th 1999 held in Ireland. His marital life has been blessed with three sons- Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz. His marriage to Victoria has seen him gaining more global popularity in both the British and world press on a daily basis.

A hugely talented footballer, Beckham has created some enviable records for both club and country in his career which has spanned more than 20 years. During the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he became the only English player to score in three World cups. He also became the fifth player to score from a direct free kick when he scored against Ecuador in 2006 and Colombia in 1998 via free-kicks. He was also the first British footballer to play one hundred Champions League matches.

He is presently a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador with special emphasis on promoting sports development especially in developing countries. His humanitarian gestures have seen him supporting the less privilege children in Africa and beyond.

10. Luis Figo, a world famous football star, who played for FC Barcelona from 1995 till 2000. He was arguably the fans’ most favorite player in FC Barcelona, until 2000. That’s when «it» happened, Barcelona’s biggest rivals, Real Madrid, decided to splash the cash and break the transfer list fees record by getting Luis to Real Madrid.

The move caused outrage among Barcelona fans, Madrid got him for a world record fee of 38 Million Pounds. And that’s when the fun begins, during the match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, when Luis Figo stepped up to take the corner kick, a pig’s head was thrown at him from Barcelona’s side. Another incident took place during the 2004 EURO Cup Final between Greece and Portugal. A Portuguese fan ran out on the field, managed to outrun the police, and heading towards Luis threw a Barcelona jersey at him, as the whole world was watching.

9. 1996 – African Challenge.

1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, The most surprising gold medals went to the hands of Nigerian football stars after they overcame Brazil in thrilling semi-finals, with a 4-3 score. The finals was between Argentina and Nigeria, well over 2 billion people were watching it, of course most of them thought that Argentina will have no problems getting the gold medal, but most of them were wrong. Argentina was in the driver’s seat after leading 1-0. The goal came on a 3rd minute, scored by Claudio Lopez, on the 28th minute Nigeria managed to equalize, as Babayaro scored a perfect finisher. So it was 1-1 on half-time. In the early second half Hernan Crespo gave Argentina the lead again and Argentina was on the way to get the gold medals, but «not so fast» said Amokachi as he scored the equalizing goal and again gave Nigeria hope. Match was almost over and everybody thought it was going to be decided by the penalty shoot out. 90th minute and Amunike gave the lead to Nigeria, it was a shock for Argentina, time was almost over, Argentina had no chance, so it ended with a final score 3-2. Nigeria won the gold medal, for the first time in Olympic Games history.

8. 1960, First ever UEFA European Football Championship (EURO) held in France. It was won by the USSR, beating Yugoslavia 2-1 in a tense final in Paris. It is however quite interesting to note that earlier in the competition Spain had withdrawn from its quarterfinal match against the USSR due to political reasons. As an interesting fact, USSR also scored the first goal in the EURO history, during the qualification games.

7. 1998/1999 English Premier League season, Manchester United got all trophies possible that season. They became the first ever team in football history to do so in one season. First they got the Premier League title, finishing first in the league table, then they took the F.A. Cup title by beating Newcastle United 2-0, and of course the most famous UEFA Champions League final, when United managed to come back from a 1-0 defeat, and score not one but two goals in an injury time beating Bayern Munich 2-1; it was considered to be one of the greatest comebacks ever witnessed.

6. 2002 World Cup, Korea/Japan. Korean fans will never forget that historic moment, when Guus Hiddink took them all the way to the Semi-Finals of 2002 World Cup. Korean national football team became the first ever Asian national football team to reach semi-finals of World Cup. Nobody expected the underdogs to go that far, as they beat Portugal 1-0 in a group stages, then a famous 2-1 win over Italy, drawing with Spain in a quarter-finals and then beating them 5-3 on penalties. In the end however they couldn’t take on Germany in semi-finals, and they lost 1-0. In the game for the third place Korean team met Turkey, but again they lost. Eventually the Republic of Korea finished 4th in the 2002 World Cup, which was still a great success for the country’s football team.

5. June 2003, Chelsea FC was bought by the Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich for a record fee of 140 million pounds. Back then it was the biggest sale of an English Football club. Straight away Roman wanted to make Chelsea the best and strongest club in the world. He began buying players for a record braking transfer fees. First season with a new owner Chelsea FC finished as a runner-up. But next year, the 2004/2005 English premier league season, Chelsea became champions of England, for the first time since 1954/1955 season. 2005/2006 Season they took the premier league trophy again as they were crowned the champions of England for the second time in a row. These 2 seasons were the most successful 2 years in the club’s history.

4. January 11th 2007. It was confirmed that David Beckham will be leaving Real Madrid to play for the United States «soccer» club, Los Angeles Galaxy. Beckham’s decision was a shock to many, as one of the world’s best football players moves to United States of America, where «soccer» is not that popular. He was the first big player to enter Major League Soccer.

3. 6th February 1958, the Munich air disaster. It was the darkest day in Manchester United Football Club history. On the board of the plane was Manchester United football team along with the club supporters and journalists. 23 of the 44 passengers on board died. Captain James Thain, the pilot tried to take off twice, but both attempts were aborted due to engine surging. When a third take off was attempted, the plane failed to gain adequate height and crashed into the fence surrounding the airport and then into a house. Now every year on this day Manchester United holds a memorial to the people who lost their lives in the Munich air disaster.

2. 2006 World Cup Final produced one of the most famous moments in football history, when Zidane’s head-butted on Italian defender Marco Materazzi. It was Zidane’s last international appearance for the French national team and 3 billion people around the world were watching it. The next day newspapers all over the world were not writing about how Italy won their 4th World Cup title, but they were writing about how Zidane pulled the «stunt» on Marco. Definitely that was one of the biggest moments in the history of football.

1. Edison Arantes do Nascimento, aka Pele, the world’s most famous name in football. Football is probably the most famous sport in the world, and Pele is the man who made it what it is today. Pele made 669 appearances in club football, scoring 626 goals. He also made 92 appearances for Brazilian National football side and scored 77 goals. He made his first club appearance when he was just 15 years of age. He made his first international appearance for Brazil when he was 16, and won his first World Cup when he was just 17. Pele is hailed in Brazil as a national hero. The number one moment in football history is when Pele managed to score his first international goal for Brazil, just three month before his 17th birthday.

It could be argued that with a different manager, Inter Milan would have done better in the champions league, Roma would have been leading or at least on equal amount of points with Inter, Chelsea would have been in the FA cup final and Arsenal would not be as successful as they have been.

But nowhere is it more glaring than the top 2 sides in Spain, that a top quality manager is needed for the full potential of a squad of brilliant players to be realised.

The way Real Madrid and Barcelona have gone about this season has been massively disappointing and most of the blame should be put squarely on the shoulders of the respective managers as they have made so many baffling tactical decisions, it has stopped being amusing.

Neither team has been entirely convincing this season and it is only because of the lack of belief from the other sides in the league that Real Madrid is still leading the league.

Teams like Villareal, Athletico Madrid, Sevilla and Espanyol lack the inner belief that they could win the league and they seem to be content with qualifying for 4th position at the very most.

The decisions taken by Bernd Schuster this season when it comes to his starting line-up and also his substitutions have been mind boggling to say the least and on Saturday night against Mallorca, he was at it again.

It is puzzling that he thinks that Gonzalo Higuain is a better option than Robinho in the starting line-up and his insistence on starting with Marcello at left back no matter how many mistakes he continues to make is another strange issue.

It was going well very luckily for him when Real Madrid were leading by 1-0 through a Wesley Sneijder goal but then Sergio Ramos was harshly sent off and this is where Schuster displayed his lack of acumen by taking off Higuain (rightly) but bringing on Mahamadou Diarra in what turned out to be a disastrous decision.

Diarra is not a right back and Mallorca quickly capitalised on that and got the equaliser from ex Real Madrid player, Borja Valero. He then realised his error and brought on Miguel Torres who is a right back and should have been brought on in the 1st place to replace Sneijder.

Then in the most bizarre substitution of all he took off his leading scorer Raul and brought on Julio Baptista and really Mallorca should have won the game in the last minute when their leading scorer, Daniel Guiza missed an absolute sitter.

Would Barcelona take advantage of this loss of 2 points by Real Madrid? Of course not! Not while Frank Rijkaard keeps matching Schuster for ineptitude with his stranger decision to keep playing Thierry Henry on the left, Samuel Etoo on the right and Bojan Krkic in the middle.

Bojan is far away the smallest of the 3, the least experienced and the one with the least amount of goals but Rijkaard still persists in playing his as the centre forward.

Obviously Barcelona struggled to a 0-0 draw against a Getafe side that expended a lot of energy in their excellent 1-1 draw on Thursday against German giants, Bayern Munich in the UEFA cup.

It is no wonder that everyone seems bemused in the Barcelona squad when players are continually played out of position.

The saddest part is neither Real Madrid nor Barcelona were made to pay for their results as 2nd placed team, Villiareal lost at Sevilla by 2-0 with goals by Luis Fabiano and a Freddy Kanoute penalty.
