He was known as ‘The Kaiser’. Franz Beckenbauer is still probably considered to be the best German footballer of all time. The Bundesliga mourns its biggest legend and pays tribute to his life’s work in this video. He was promoted to the Bundesliga with Bayern and led his club to four league titles in 12 years alongside Gerd Müller. As a player, he won the World Cup and the European Championships with Germany. And, as the coach of his native Germany, he became a legend by winning the 1990 World Cup in Italy. A first class human being as well. We will never forget probably the best sweeper of all time.

Niech spoczywa w spokoju.

  2. Franz Beckenbauer was without any doubt one of the all- time footballing greats. The world has lost a great sportsman and also a great ambassador for the sport of football. RIP Franz.

  3. RIP to Der Kaiser. 🙏🏾

It's come as a shock to us here in England.

I must say, I thought he was strangely quiet when Bobby Charlton passed away.

I knew he thought a lot of Sir Bobby.

I guess that his illnesses had consumed him at this point.

  4. Beckenbauer revolutionised the sweeper role with his forward raids. Like Cruyff, Pele, and De Stefano, he was a multi-role total footballer, who could mark, intercept, begin and finish attacks. For this reason he's ahead of whoever came after, just as Pele will always be the greatest, Beckenbauer is the greatest defender. Furthermore in his era it was the toughest, while the best faced each other. Beckenbauer faced Pele and Cruyff in his career..he faced the greatest England team, of 1970, he overcame total football in 1974. Nobody could fill his boots now. People saying Maldini forget, Maldini had two bites at the World Cup..and lost both, one at home. Beckenbauer nailed the one chance he got, against arguably the finest team of any World Cup..alongside Hungary and the three Brazils of '58, '70 and '82.

Football has a before and after effect: Before De Stefano – after De Stefano. Before Pele – after Pele. Before Cruyff – after Cruyff. Before Maradona – after Maradona. Since Zidane there hasn't been a player of this stature in the world game. Before Beckenbauer football was one way, after Beckenbauer football another way…that is how his status is measured.

  5. As a Brit, Franz is one of those players you loved to hate just because of his genius, greatness and leadership quality as a man. He was undeniable as one of the greatest to ever kick a football. Rest in peace, Kaiser. The game will miss you.
