Why Did Bayern Munich Play With 12 Men Against Freiburg?

Bayern Munich briefly played with 12 men on the field against Fribourg on Saturday. Fribourg have now decided to file a complaint against the Bavarian club. As for Pep Guardiola, he was in jovial mood as he, himself, discussed lining up 12 players for his side’s first leg Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid.

  1. Just because the game is between Bayern and Freiburg and it was only for 17 seconds can't be used at excuse. I imagine Bayern will blame the match officials because ultimately they are the one in charge of the match and nothing happen.

  2. So can I assume you agree if they’d played the whole 90m with 12 you’d expect them to be penalised, so where exactly would you draw the line? Do you give a penalty for an offence that is only a mm inside the box?

  3. Douglas Costa was at Juventus before moving back to Brazil. Btw, he SUCKED in his return to Brazil. VERY disappointing at Grêmio, his original club, which ended relegated.

As for Bayern, the error is on the ref assistant. How come they did not checked that a player had left before allowing the other to enter?

  4. I think in theory the Freiburg reasoning is actually really sound, even if they are obviously not saying it altruistically. The German FA should hand out a small punishment for Bayern like a fine or something to set a precedent going forward. It’s an accident, but one that should have solid precedent if it were to happen again in the future.

  5. Everyone saying it doesn't matter because the 8 seconds didn't matter, that's not the point. The rules of the game were breached. What I find confusing is why Bayern is being blamed for it, the 4th official is in charge of substitutions. The officiating crew should be the ones that are punished.

  6. I don't even think it is a fault of Bayern at all. It is the referees' fault. It was their responsibility to take the player off the field, send the new player on, and blow the whistle to restart play.

  7. Freiburg was legally obligated to file a complaint, as there are many other parties involved such as shareholders in the club, and a breach of rules cannot just be ignored. There were 12 Bayern players on the pitch for 17 seconds, but the flow of the game was interrupted for a further 6 minutes and then continued in an incorrect way (referee ball instead of freekick for Freiburg and yellow card for surplus Bayern player). At this point it was 3-1, and if it would have restarted with a free-kick, that gap could have been closed with a second goal for Freiburg, considering that they have the best free-kick taker in the whole league. Scoring another goal in 3 min + extra time isn't such a far out prospect, so the game could have been a draw. This is all speculation, of course, but it hopefully shows how a breach of rules, however short, has consequences for the events afterwards.
Coach Streich summed it up perfectly today after the complaint was overthrown: the two parties which were to blame in parts were Bayern and the team of referees, yet Freiburg as the third party were forced to look like an unfair sports team by launching an appeal which addressed the breach….

  8. The thing is that if it was bayern losing against 12 men even if its only for 8 seconds. Im sure they are winning the case. It doesn't matter if you cant score a goal in 8 seconds. Bayern should be punished.
