Sadio Mane was intended to be a transformational superstar at Bayern Munich. An indication of the Bundesliga club’s “gravitational pull”. After all, he was one of the guaranteed starters in Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League & Premier League-winning Liverpool sides.

But 13 months on he is no longer in Germany. Why? What happened during Mane’s time in Munich? Seb Stafford-Bloor explains. Craig Silcock illustrates.

  1. Many players play their absolute best under Klopp. It's no accident. Mane is similar to Coutinho. Both lack a bit of confidence, that a top manager needs to instill in them.

  2. He went from a close-knit club that had worked hard together to win to a club in trouble at the board level, to a squad which is used to being handed the title, and to a manager out of his depth that didn't understand why he worked at Liverpool.

Feel like I also need to point out that everyone at Bayern was mediocre at best last year.

  3. As a Senegalese, I strongly disagree with those "he's lost his pace" comments 😂. If you watch his game against Brazil in 2023, you'll see that MANE's role at Bayern and Liverpool during his last season was different from previous seasons. He didn't need to press or sprint as much due to how teams defended deep in the PL and Bundesliga. His impact after leaving Liverpool proves this. I remember a Liverpool Vs Barcelona preseason match during his first season with Liverpool, where they beat Barcelona with ease even before Salah joined. Bayern didn't have faith in him, and Liverpool didn't offer him a better salary, leading to his departure. There were internal problems at Bayern after the coach and board changes. Despite the move to Saudi, MANE remains a world-class player in my heart, and one poor season won't change that. Don't forget he missed the WC and had a surgery with all this fiasco going on.

  4. I found it extremely frustrating when we signed Mane. He didn't fit at Bayern except as a replacement of one of our already established wingers. It reeked to much of a publicity stunt.
Even so, I rooted for him to succeed every minute he played. A sad state of affairs in the end. On to greener pastures, Mane. It wasn't you, it was us.

  5. It would be interesting to see how the drive to make big money transfers and the motivations of agents to generate large cuts from themselves, create situations where plays like Mane ultimately really suffer on the pitch. There's likely in many of these cases, interest from clubs who might suit the player better on the pitch without being a high profile a move, or offering the same financial reward.
